Some of you might remember the 1952
3-D film Bwana Devil, which was based on the true story of a pair
of lions responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers during
the building of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1898.
[Despite its modest budget, Bwana Devil was a huge commercial success when it first came out thanks to the novelty of it being in 3-D. Its success resulted in the production of a number of other and much better 3-D movies before the craze finally wore itself out.] |

The biggest early problem with
presenting 3D films in theaters
was the requirement to utilize
both projectors simultaneously
which reduced the running time
to a single reel of about 23
minutes until they came out with
oversized film reel magazines
for the projectors so they could
splice a few reels together
I knew of several projectionists
that kept then in place after no
more 3D presentations in order
to reduce the changeovers which
gave them more free time
BWANA DEVIL was a thrill to a boy my age. We got lions leaping into your face, and Barbara Britton in your lap.
