Joe Arcaris achieved the highest respect among the best trainers. He was tops at trainer's tricks, leaving many envious, if awed with admiration. In 1940, at the Clyde Beatty Jungle Zoo, in Ft. Lauderdale, he rescued Chester Czaja from a full-scale attack by 5 untrained male lions. For this, he received the Carnegie Hero Medal. Clyde Beatty could not finish the season when his wife, Harriett, died in 1950. The only call made was to Joe Arcaris who came at once, and took over presenting the act. He wrote to me that he stepped in immediately, with one hurried rehearsal, and worked the act with no trouble. He had been of singular value to Beatty for an important period, and was the man of the hour during Beatty's time of grief.
