The photo was taken on the dock in Boston when Honey arrived. The man on the left is the celebrated African animal catcher Christoph Schulz and on the right is Boston zoo director Dan Harkins. He frequently went down to the docks to see newly landed animals of which there were many over the years. He kept diaries, and I was privileged to examine them and make notes. Wonderful stuff there! * * * * Since 2010 there have been no elephants in either Lincoln Park or Brookfield, ergo, an elephant-less Chicago at this writing. * * * * African elephants, either bush or forest, were very rare in 20th century USA before WWII. Karl Kae Knecht's census of elephants in America in 1933 listed only 5 Africans (all of them in zoos) three of which were forest elephants. [White Tops, July-August, 1933 ]. Daisy, a female bush elephant at Honolulu Zoo, had been executed in early 1933 after killing her keeper. * * * * Chicagoans would have had an opportunity to see an African male the size of Field Museum's two mounted ones when the mighty Jumbo visited their city. He was of course owned by the Barnum circus then known as Barnum & London. He was in the Windy City on June 4-14, 1883 and Sept 1-6, 1884. Here he is in London Zoo just before coming to USA in 1882 - -
