Likely to have been in Philly
where she would come to visit
with her family annually
Grace and Ranier were close friends with Clyde Beatty. If they were in town, they visited him every year on the Lighthouse Field lot in Philadelphia. In '64, Beatty dressed in a suit and tie, and left early several mornings. I wondered why I was not tagged to drive him, and he told me he was simply doing publicity at TV studios. But rumors on the lot held that the royal couple got him in to see Philly's high society doctors for the "aches and pains" he had begun to suffer. It was his cancer, but too early in its origins to be accurately diagnosed. We closed Philly on May 31st. By the time we all sat down to Mrs. Bob Good's elegant table, in Allentown, on June 21st, Mr. Beatty was too sick to try to eat. As we learned very soon, by then any treatment for him was too late.
