Bands #10

Cole Bros. Circus on a hot day.
Col. Harry Thomas, Harry MacFarland Performance Director and Eddie Woekner  Band leader.
Woekner played Cornet but would occasionally chime in with a slide whistle, usually during clown walkarounds and the elephant acts.
I suppose clowns and bull hands were the only people who would tolerate it.
I thought it was ghastly.

On my 2nd tour with Miller-Johnson, I had the Jungleland Fighting Lions, and doubled as Ringmaster/Announcer. Del Graham was highly proud that year of his long-desired all-girl flying act, and handed the bandleader a specially-arranged chart. In the first show, the drummer found it amusing to blow a bird whistle while the girls flew. Everyone cringed, and I told him to knock it off. In the second show, there was a strange noise coming from the drum kit. Del had punched the bird whistle into the drummer's false teeth.
