Related Pix #5

Rex Williams told me you had to handle this elephant with kid gloves, you could only push her so far. One morning on the Dailey Show he saw his brother  George working her in a team pulling wagons in the mud and getting rough with her. Rex said he started running across the the lot yelling No! No! No! but before he could get there Lucy had lunged over and knocked him completely off Myrtles head.
Smokey said she once came after him right in the ring while he was working the act but he managed to duck around behind other elephants and she cooled off and resumed the act like nothing had happened.
He added that somewhere along the line someone  had taught her a number of mundane tricks like you could place your hat on the ground and she would pick it up and gently place it on your head.
One day Art Eldridge was visiting the show and said to the crew "Well, there's old Lucy, here's something you young punks don't know!" he removed his hat, threw it on the ground and said, "Lucy.....pick it up! and she immediately grabbed it and ate it.
Smokey said Eldridge was bald headed and he remembered him jumping up and down yelling "Damn it all to Hell!" and it was the only time he ever heard Louie Reed laugh.

Only thing I can add is that Jack Joyce got drafted so had to sell her to Ben, who put her on Austin Bros.

Don Marcks said she fell out of a truck in Mexico and rolled down a mountain to her death on the way to Guadalajara.

Bob- I tell people when I'm gone all my wisdom goes with me. But they just laugh. They don't even bother to take notes!
