Here Comes The Circus! #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Several years ago, Buckles’ Blog ran a pictorial summary of HERE COMES THE CIRCUS, the Castle Films short subject that was filmed on the Cole Bros. Circus in 1941. When HERE COMES THE CIRCUS was released in 1942, Castle Films took out this full-page ad in MOVIE MAKERS MAGAZINE, a publication intended for serious amateur filmmakers.

Eric: Not all the footage was from 1941 as Beatty had last been on the show in 1938.

The Beatty footage in HERE COMES THE CIRCUS has always been suspect since it appears to have been filmed at an indoor appearance. (Eugene Castle was a master at obtaining newsreel footage from his New York contacts, which he would incorporate into his short subjects.) In 1943, Castle released CLYDE BEATTY'S ANIMAL THRILLS (which might have been filmed in 1942 or even 1941) so he must have been on good terms with Beatty.

Eric: Thanks. These are the pedestals he used with Cole Bros 1935-38. The only NYC date he played with them was at the Hippodrome in 1937. I do not think these shots were made there as in one brief shot you can see another ring in the background and the Hipp date was played in one ring.

I suspect this was from the 1938 Chicago Stadium date from the masking seen behind him hiding the cages, which was used there. Also the two sit-up lions were a new feature of his 1938 act.
