I was hoping that you might be able to help me with a question I received for my Question & Answer column in the Little Circus Wagon. Would you happen to know what the little windows were on the old Ringling elephant cars?. They are a little above the floor line. I thought they might be some sort of an air vent. I also thought (and this is a very wild guess) that they may be used by the handlers to reach in and unfasten the legs chains.
