Hugo Schmitt once told me that about 1927 he delivered an African elephant from the Hagenbeck Zoo to the Detroit Zoo and while there decided to catch the Ringling Show in Chicago.
While in the menagerie he asked around if anyone spoke German and his guide turned out to be Camel Dutch Narfski.
The elephant by the way later wound up becoming "Safari" on the Cole Show.
Buckles, how difficult is it to change an elephant's name? How do you get them to answer to the new name?
