This is a 4-sheet Dan Rice poster for 1859 from the magnificent collections of the American Antiquarian Society. Featured is the elephant Lalla Rookh trained by Charles Noyes and she is likely the first (at least on an American circus) to perform a headstand. Lalla Rookh died in 1860 after a PR stunt in which she swam the Ohio River from Covington, KY to Cincinnati. Dick Flint Baltimore
