Martin & Osa Johnson #23



Using a wind-up phonograph and a recording of popular dance music, Osa leads the Mbuti in an impromptu dance routine for the benefit of the camera.

This sequence is from CONGORILLA, one of the first sound films to be made on location in Africa. This “dance routine” was undoubtedly thought up to make additional use of the sound recording equipment that the expedition carried along with it. Back then, sound movies were still a novelty with audiences.
