Hi Buckles The notes about the stack smoke color on the locomotive shown in the film frames reminded me of this photo of the last great restored Union Pacific steam engine Must have been wasting tons of coal |

Chic: I believe this was an oil burner.
If anyone wants to see magnificent photographs of steam locomotives
in their final days check out O. Winston Link's photos of the Norfolk & Western.
Paul
I did know that Dave but coal made
a better link to the story line
Trust you to spoil my fun
All in all not a clean burn
I've also got a ton of steam shots
both domestic & Britanic Paul
Right Dave, It is oil burner. However, It was converted from coal to oil around 1990 because the coal cinders were causing grass fires. This Union Pacific #3985 is one of only 2 of the largest steam locomotives that are still in existence. The other is the UP #3977 on permanent display in North Platte, Nebraska.
I grew up three doors from the L&N mainline. They used steam for troop trains during the War and sometimes the soldiers would wave at us kids.
The soldiers must not have listened to the mothers saying, "Don't raise that window or you'll get a cinder in your eye!!!"
Many years later Mary Jane and I lived just two doors from an NC&StL industrial spur and the sound of trains in the night would put us to sleep like a lullaby. She had grown up on a C&O spur to the coal mine where her daddy worked.
Chic: I knew that you knew; my comment was for the less informed out there.
Isn't The Union Pacific #4014 still
around on display somewhere Hal
I believe it was called "Big Boy"
Of course Dave I knew that you
knew that I knew but you also know
that I enjoy knowing that you know
He who laughs last often laughs by
himself (old circus proverb)
Yes it is Chic, I forgot about that one. UP 4014 was bought back by UP from a railroad museum but can`t remeber which one. The last I heard was that it was in Pamona Calif. I believe that there was another UP Big Boy on display somewhere in Wisconsin also. The UP Big Boys were so long that they would only fit on a few of the round house turntables. Dave, I just am old enough to remember a few steam engines. My Dad`s cousin was a yard hostler for Southern Railway at Andrews Yard here in Columbia SC when I was a boy. One of my most cherished memories was Dad lifting me into the cab of the steam engine and Cousin George riding me around in the yard. It was a real thrill for a kid about 5 or 6 years old at the time. I`ve always had a love for trains, circus & carnivals, I guess cause they all go hand in hand.
I believe it was due to owning
several small railroads that John
Ringling was able to get favorable
track rates for his trains
I wonder how many shows traveled by
rail in their hayday simultaneously
Now it's only Strates & Big Bertha
I read that Norfolk Southern has
just opened a new bulk transfer
facility yard near the airport in
Columbia Hal (anywhere near you?)
No one has mentioned that old quote:
"There's something about a train!"
Paul
Or the air conditioner company ad
Paul "Nothing Can Stop A Trane"
It`s about 5 miles from me Chic. The airport is not the main airport but Owens Field a in town airport in the Rosewood section of Columbia. Andrews Yard is right behind it not far from the State Fair Grounds. RBBB parks their coaches in Andrews Yard when they play here. It`s about 3-4 miles from the arena. I had a nice visit with Joe Colossa the Blue Unit trainmaster in the yard this year.
Chic, As my wife tells me all the time,"You`re not always right"!!! So, I have to correct myself. The new NS Bulk Transfer station is not at Andrews Yard but is near the main Columbia Metro Airport in West Columbia, that`s about 12-15 miles from me. It`s about 2 miles of of Interstate I-26 on Old Dunbar Rd. It just opened a couple of weeks ago.
