Joan summons her lions using the command “SimmmmBaaaa.”

Speaking of commands, can anyone identify for us the famous 4-footed screen star from the 1950s who would go into action at the command, “Yo, Rinty!”

Eric, Eric,
SHAZAM, or is this a trick question, or are you expecting to hear Rin Tin Tin?

RIP Annette Funicello

James Brown starred on the Rinty show as Lt. Rip Masters, from 1954-1959. We had him star at the Heart O' Texas Rodeo during that time. During my years in Waco High School, rumors persisted that he was an alum, but IMDb claims he attended grades 1-12 in the Desdemona, Texas system. Then we heard he attended Baylor as a tennis champ--which he was--and studied acting under the redoubtable Paul Baker there. IMDb's bio doesn't mention Baylor. For a time, he was in John Wayne's 1940s stock company, and out here they say Wayne got him the Rinty show, as he got James Arness cast as Matt Dillon on GUNSMOKE. As for the old rule that no SAG member can have the same name as a previously registered actor, there have been 12 James or Jim Browns as actors in Hollywood.

In October 1967, my Simba lion almost hooked out my left eye. Where was Joan when I needed her?

Roger, did you ever know a Leon Leopard..animal dealer out of Waco?

GARY: I knew of Leon Leopard, but never got around the guy. He was blind, but active and successful as an animal dealer. I started getting in with cats in the small Texas zoos in 1960, and this led to the Cen-Tex Zoo, in Waco. Leon had some dealings with the place. A friend of mine at that zoo was married to a stunningly beautiful Waco High classmate of mine. One dark night, she left my friend very suddenly and ran off with Leon--I think to a place of his in Florida. Leon died not many years after this. His widow, if she still goes by Mrs. Leopard, is still very much around.

ERIC: Here's a trivia question to go with your "Yo, Rinty!" Whose line was it--in every episode? What was the actor's name, and what role did he play? (Hint--I watched it every week.)
