Saint-Gaudens designed a second and completely new Diana, which was only 13 feet tall. Made of hollowed, gilded copper, she was light enough to rotate with the wind as originally planned. Installed on November 18, 1893, she was the highest point in New York City at the time and could be seen from all over the city and as far away as New Jersey. At night, Diana was illuminated by electric lights. In 1925, when the second Madison Square Garden was demolished to make way for the construction of the New York Life Building, Diana was removed and put into storage. It was hoped that she would remain in New York City, but after a seven-year search to find a suitable location, she was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. |
