Barnum & Bailey Dutch Litho #1 Although much has been written about the Barnum & Bailey tour of Germany and France in 1901-02, very little exists related to the tour of Holland following the German route of 1901. This is a very rare poster from that tour that is part of the circus collection at the Teyler Museum in Haarlem, The Netherlands. This lithograph was designed by Strobridge and was used in the United States by Barnum & Bailey prior to the European tour. It also was produced with German text. It is very rare to see a poster of this era with a date tail - especially one for a European city, plus the Dutch text on the poster makes it that much more rare and unusual. Incidentally, while Barnum & Bailey was in Europe, this same artwork was used in the United States by the Bailey-controlled Forepaugh Sells Circus. |
