I find these instruments very intriguing because as I look at them,it would appear that when the musicians would hold them up to play, the bells would be facing back over the players shoulders and hence directing the most sound to the rear. Is some knowlegeable historian going to tell me, of course to the rear, to keep the attention of those following the parade. Bet Sousa or Evans could explain.

These type of instruments were used by civil war marching bands so that the sound would go back over their shoulder to the troops marching behind them.
