The public never caught on as the show was truly "ahead of its time" and the marketing never connected with an audience--too, too bad! Sorry the show got shelved so early in its run, ending up, as i recall, as a Summer attraction at the then-struggling Circus World. |

I remember hearing that the problem was the title.
That most of the American public thought it was an Automobile Show.
Jerry,
I think a great mystery will always be why this show never caught on. The thought's and reason's why are a thousand fold. The 70's were such an incredibly exciting time in circus show business.

Another enigma is why Soleil did catch on.
The Felds (all 5) wanted to show
the world that they could have the
same success without the RB title
Many advisors suggested against
the premise & offered using it
as the presenting parent but alas
we all know the outcome
I designed & created almost all
of the elements for this show but
only took credit as Tech Director
I just happen to have all of the
original plans & many sample
elements from this production
(up for bids)
We arrived in Providence during
a record breaking cold snap &
our train which hadn't had the
insulation sprayed on all the
external plumbing due to running
out of time in Venice all froze
We had to move into a hotel
I celebrated my 36th birthday
during this engagement
Jerry,
Amazing, I had never heard the "premise" about showing the world they didn't need the Ringling name. So instead, to prove the power of "Feld" they attach themselves to Prince Rainier and Monte Carlo????? What a limp dick alibi that was. I think all it proved was that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey was more powerful then Prince Rainier and Monte Carlo & Feld combined.
Thank you for the insight into the mind set of Private Idaho.

Buckles,
I think it is very easy to understand the enormous success of Soleil. After hundred's of years of the "same old, same old" folks were ready for something different. Recall, show's even copied each others advertizing paper. I also think innovation/different is why the Moscow Circus enjoyed great success in the States for a period of time.
