"John Wayne", as we know, was a cowboy character developed over several films by the Duke--which nickname came to him during his football days for USC, when he was still Marion Michael Morrison. He was discovered when working a part-time job on Props at Paramount. Credit is given to many for that almost exaggerated walk, and the stalling, emphatic drawl. Howard Hawks and John Ford were important in evolving the Wayne persona. Duke was honest and generous in giving credit to those from whom, like all actors, he "borrowed" specific bits. He told of using the "telegraphing technique" of making a manly gesture toward something, then delivering his line about it, which came from Harry Carey, Sr. He also borrowed from Carey the bit of crossing his left hand to hold his right arm for a pose, seen in his closing shot in THE SEARCHERS. Harry, Jr. in turn benefitted from Wayne's good nature by appearing often as a staple of the star's stock company.
