CLYDE BEATTY, WIRE-WALKING LION, & MOVIE STARLET From Roger Smith This is the one photo known to me of Clyde Beatty and a wire-walking lion--this one incongruously named Tiger. The studio caption reads: "LOOK OUT BELOW! - Leslie Brooks, currently being seen in Columbia Pictures' COVER GIRL, seems perfectly unmindful of any danger when 'Tiger' walks the ropes for Clyde Beatty. Miss Brooks, an avid circus fan, learned a few pointers from Mr. Beatty in lion taming and training while the circus was in town. (Leslie Brooks #395) COLUMBIA PICTURES - Photo by CRONENWETH." This undated shot is under the Beatty Big Top. The man partially seen in the background, in the white cap, looks like Bert Pettus. Since this was the Los Angeles date, and since Beatty had no wire-walking cats, the lion may have been borrowed from Goebel's Lion Farm. I do not recognize this wire rigging, but note the cables appear to be 3/8", too small for a lion's feet. The Compound had numerous wire-walkers, all on twin 3/4"cables, 1 foot apart, 20 feet long, 6 feet high. |
