75 years ago this month, the first issue of LIFE Magazine appeared on November 23, 1936. That very first issue had three circus-related images. The first two were included in an article on American artist John Steuart Curry, whose career was just starting to take off. In 1931, Curry had traveled with the Ringling show, looking for dramatic subjects on which to improve his draughtsmanship. CIRCUS ELEPHANTS was one of the more spectacular paintings from that tour. (The article did mention that, at the time of publication, it was still awaiting a buyer.) Does anyone know where the original is now? |
