This great lithograph from 1915 presents a very crisp and clean image on behalf of Barnum & Bailey. A bold presentation of the circus title - under the big top and portraits of the show founders. Classic advertising and a fine circus poster promoting "The Greatest Show on Earth." |

Fantastic artwork clean & simple
No "Circus" & no "The"
When was "The" added to "TGSOE"
When did it 1st go into the globe
Chic,
The title was originally "P.T. Barnum's Greatest Show on Earth" and in 1890s the show was promoted as "The Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth", but for decades use of "The" as part of the GSOE title in print was inconsistent. As for the globe logo itself - although Barnum & Bailey used a globe in an "excursion" poster in 1892, and there was some use of a globe logo during the period around the merger in 1919 - the "classic" globe logo didn't really come into general usage until the early 1920s when it began regularly appearing on posters. The globe logo virtually disappeared during the Gumpertz years in the 1930s when "Combined Shows" was replaced with "Circus" on most posters, but it has been in consistent usage in print advertising each season since 1943.
Thanks Chris as I've wondered
about the inconsistency of the
several versions & of the globe
From the early 60s it was always
"TGSOE" in the globe to me
I have also preferred the title
"Combined Shows Inc" & my least
favorite corporate title was
"I & K Productions Inc" but that
didn't last too long however
They dont use a globe now. At some point it became a thing that looks like a big rubber ball. When I came back in 2001 I saw the logo was tilted I thought whoever put the decals on couldnt see straight. I asked about it and was told that Market research told them if it was tilted a certain degree people would notice it more. I miss the Globe.
As I like to remark,"Its the Greatest Show On Earth to be from". I am pleased to have been there. It kind of completes the journey but was just a part of that journey and other wonderful highlights. A small part of quite a Fraternity. john herriott
You & your family were far more
than just a small part John
Just ask anyone that knows & that
group is a much larger fraternity
