On August 29, 1938, Bill butted Hilda and caused her to fall into the 25-foot deep concrete moat that circumscribed their enclosure. (The September 12, 1938 issue of LIFE Magazine ran a series of pictures showing Hilda being rescued from the moat.)

Dry moats in zoos was always a problem in the past, and at least 28 elephants died short time after falling down in dry moats, possibly several more elephants.

Ziggy in Brookfield Zoo, may be the most famous case.

The latest case I know was Ranny (Rani) at Mexico City Zoo, dying in March 2009. (One of the seven wonders, sold from Ringling to Mexico city zoo in 1957)

Hilda is now the earliest case (1938) I list at http://www.elephant.se/elephant_moats.php
