DeMille would typically have filmed a scene like this on a Hollywood soundstage, with Lyle Bettger standing in front of a process screen onto which was back-projected footage of the elephants that had been obtained by the second unit. Filming so many of GSOE’s scenes on location was a rare departure from the way DeMille normally did things, but in the end added tremendously to the film’s effectiveness.
