This should be Oscar Konyot and about 9 lions. Looks like the tunnel is directly opposite our POV. That Art Concello never liked the steel arena is proven here with the shrunken cage given this act, made embarrassingly small inside the 40-foot ringcurb.
Roger why would you say that about Concello? He made two fortunes off of Clyde Beatty.Johnny
Roger I would think that this
smaller arena served at least
the conditions of a better fit
for an act of fewer animals as
well as fewer sections to load
& handle for economy
When Concello ran other shows that included a cage, his well-known mantra was, "OK, they've seen the lions. Now get 'em out."
Concello partnered with Beatty to make money off the man's name, and certainly, both celebrated success. But here he had no say in managing the wild animal act, or the up and down of the 40-foot Beatty cage.
Chic: To address your point--As the postcard says, this could be a training session. X-number of sections might be cut to reduce the diameter of the arena, giving the trainer what we call a "breaking cage".
Oscars act was close up work with the lions with lots of comedy. Nine lions would be lost in a 40ft. beatty style cage and in fact in my travels I fan think of very few that ever had a 40ft. arena. Generally circus rings are at the most about 38ft. Naturally RBBB is ring size cage because it rises out of ring curb. We know that Prof. Kellar and Lillycristiansen had about the smallest diameter arenas. On Hoxie Jr. Ruffin worked in about 25f. Just observations. Thanks, Johnny
Incidentally, Concello had a big slice of that B-C show and would not be involved without knowing of the public recognition of Beatty. I believe you will note that when he bought the Webbs Rusell bros. truck show he immediately got Beatty and changed the name to Beatty-Rusell and the to just Clyde Beatty. I can not recall his ownership of any other tent circuses other than this and later BC.johnny. Incidentally for a time his brother-in-law was cat trainer Allen King.
