An authority on Native American culture, McCoy was proficient in the Indian sign language, had many Indian friends and, while serving as adjutant general of Wyoming, was considered the “go to” person for all Indian-related matters, since the Indians trusted him to look out for their best interests. (He had broken into films when Paramount Pictures hired him to coordinate the hundreds of Indian extras that had appeared in the silent Western epic THE COVERED WAGON.)
