An authority on Native American culture, McCoy was proficient in the Indian sign language, had many Indian friends and, while serving as adjutant general of Wyoming, was considered the “go to” person for all Indian-related matters, since the Indians trusted him to look out for their best interests. (He had broken into films when Paramount Pictures hired him to coordinate the hundreds of Indian extras that had appeared in the silent Western epic THE COVERED WAGON.) He is shown here with High Eagle, one of the Indians who toured with him on Ringling (and who was one of the last veterans of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.)
