Barnett Bros. 1930's #1 (From Buckles)

Scan13341, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

I was born in 1935 and we joined Barnett Bros. in 1937.
I think the title was changed to Wallace Bros. in 1940.
In any event, Barnett Bros., Wallace Bros. and the York, S.C.
Winter Quarters are my earliest recollections of life.

On the back of this picture is written:
"Glenn W. Tait
110 Marian Ave.
Punxsutawney, Pa."

From those early mud show years up to late fifties those truck show parades never changed very much. In fact even the truks look the same. Floyd King would have been proud. I was asst. parade marshall under the capable command of Keller Priestly [husband of Jerry Priestly of Flo, bentley, wirewalking trio.] Don't get much better than that. Matt Laurish was also an asst. It was a biiig show. 54 semis , 16 elephants

Jimmy O'Dell was all around showguy. He could do alot of stuff. Some of it a little "shady" He had great big ears. Quite a character. Lots of O'Dell stories.tanglefoot

There are a few of the old Barnett Bros Winterquarters building left in York. On the one that sits on the corner of E.Jefferson & Trinity St, the words CIRCUS WINTERQUARTERS are still legiable. Last year they started a Circus Festival that they are planning on doing every other year. Bob Cline, Harold & Sharon McFeely, & myself attended and had a great time. A few of people that were connected with the shows were there and it was really intresting to hear their stories. It seem to be very successful and I believe they are planning another for next spring, I`ll get you the information on it. I believe I sent you the pictures of the WQ`s buildings & also the photos of the graves of Ray Rogers, his wife & Baron Nowak, if not let me know. The McCelvey Center Museum in York has many items from the Barnett & Wallace Bros Circuses and were the sponsers of the festival I will send you their website address.
