From Army Maguire

Nothing like the top standing in silence at night. It is like a cathedral a monument, something sacred. It you been with it you would not get it.

If you haven't been with it and for it, you wouldn't get it. Beautiful picture. Welcome back, Buckles! ~frank

Boy, that's for sure!
I can't tell you how "homesick" I get, for the "Mother-Tent" at times. There is just no way to explain it to some who hasn't "been there!"

Maybe in my next life, wouldn’t it be great if my next life started like in 1925, coming out of the great depression as a teenager, fighting a war that was understandable and where the entire country was behind me, and being a part of the Circus after war in the 50’s when I would be at my physical prime and maybe get the chance to be around some of the Circus greats. My life’s Circus cathedra is remembering coming to the Circus World Arena before dawn sometimes with my mussels so sore I needed to grab a trapeze just to stretch the kinks out so I could hold up a cup of coffee, or having to spin that tiny little blond chick very fast on the web so she could recover from her night at HoJo’s and be able to perform, how cherished now is the time I stayed hours after the show in the ring blessed with stocks aroma just to get that stupid hat trick right. I can’t describe how envious I am of you Circus folks, and how privileged I feel to have spent a portion of my life with you.

To sit inside of the Beatty top for that 10 minutes before Art Branning yelled "Doors, Doorways" was the most peaceful time of my life.
It was a feeling that you could never recapture on a arena/building show.

Branning spent his last years as

the manager/watchman in DeLand

& would happily regale anyone who

would listen about his war years

My father was the king pole and my mother the canvas. The rest of the family were the side-poles and the animals are the foundation to harness it all together.

If you are not circus, it is not possible to understand.

Well said, John.

I am honored to have been allowed to work in the same building with some great circus folks while at Circus World in Florida back in 77 & 78. Their talent and skills kept me in awe every day, much like now with the stories of the "good old days". I am honored to be a subscriber to this blog and thankful for everyone sharing their experiences and history.
