Follow-up on deceased Six Flags elephant.

Hi Buckles,

Suspicions confirmed!

All the best,

Don Covington

This was the elephant I rode on Circus Vargas until Rex encouraged Vargas to sell her. When I first joined Vargas Wally Ross was working the elephants. As a long time friend I bugged him until he let me work the ring with Trixie as she was called on Vargas. She had been chained in a zoo for most of her life before Wally brought her on Vargas as I understand it. She was working well, except she ran several times and was afraid of heights - wouldn't get up on a tub. She was a gentle gal and I always brought her a treat before mounting (a habit Wally warned me against).
We had an exciting time during a parade in Halifax. We were routed over a suspension bridge into town, and Trixie not liking heights was not happy with the height and vibrations. With ears flapping, huffing and weaving back and forth I sure didn't want to go for an unscheduled run. I tried to calm her by leaning over, hugging and patting her very enormous head and talking to her until we reached the other side. And as we wound our way through the old part of town I was eye height with the apartments lining the streets. No one offered me coffee tho.

Buckles:

Picking up on the theme of Elephants working in theme parks, we were up to Deleon Springs last week end and they had a water skiing elephant act there during the 50's. They show a video of the elephant (either "Queenie" or "Sunshine Sally" it wasn't clear) water skied and did the usual ring type act working for Elisabeth and Betty Green. Jim Rusing was the water ski & boat jumping show. There was also a monkey, dog and llama act thee too. Can you fill in any more info about this?
