Africa Screams #2

Africa%20Screams-2, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

AFRICA SCREAMS is of particular interest today because of appearances by both Clyde Beatty and Frank “Bring ‘em Back Alive” Buck, even though the two never appear on screen together at the same time. (Now THAT would have been something to see!) Fans of the 3 Stooges will also appreciate appearances by Shemp Howard (Stooge #4) and Joe Besser (Stooge #5), even though their roles are quite small.

And Max Baer is in the film, who later became Jethro Bodine on the Beverly Hillbillies.

Anytime I see one of those big Salad serving bowls I think of Jethro and how he used one of those for his breakfast cereal. A whole box would fit in the bowl.

I liked the one when asked what he wanted to become in life he said "Brain Surgeon!"
After explaining that at age 20 and still in the 3rd Grade he would be over 40 before he could achieve this and after being asked what his second choice was, he happily replied, "Street Car Operator!"

Max Baer, JR> played Jethro in The Beverly Hillbillies. Max Baer in Africa Screams is his father, who died in 1959, a few years prior to the TV series.

Senior was prizefighting's Heavyweight Champion of the World for 364 days. He knocked out champion Primo Carnera on 14 June 1934, but lost a title decision to Jimmy Braddock on 13 June 1935. ~frank

Buddy Baer was the younger brother of Max Baer, Sr. He appeared in Quo Vadis and Jack & the Beanstalk. In the years of early television, he often played the heavy in a lot of westerns. ~frank

Joe Besser and Shemp Howard (Horwitz) were members of The Three Stooges when the original stooge, Curly Howard (Jerome Horwitz) became ill.
Moe, Shemp and Curly were brothers.

As a child I had asthma and spent many days in bed watching television, so Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello and The Three Stooges kept me busy.

I always new the Baers were big boys and spurred on by today's Blog I googled them and found that Buddy was 6"7", Max Sr 6'2 1/2" and Max Jr 6' 4". Some very impressive boxing statistics are also to be found.

I believe Lou Costello was a credible boxer in his youth, as was Bob Hope (!?).

Lou never forgot his hometown of Paterson, NJ and mentions it somewhere in almost every movie and TV show.

Always got a kick out of Hillary always addressing him as "Louis".

Lou's youngest child, daughter Chris Costello, enabled me to have correspendence with our Hillary Brooke, "Diana Emerson" in this film. She remembered how excited the cast and crew were to work with Clyde Beatty, noting, "We all greatly respected the manner in which he was able to work with those animals." This glamourous lady died at 85, of a blood clot to a lung, at her home in Bonsall, California, in 1999.

"Lou King" fought in amateur bouts in his hometown of Paterson, NJ, before Lou Cristillo altered his name to Costello for an actress he adored.

Bob Hope was an undistinguished pugilist briefly known as "Packy East".

The prizefighting Baers were no kin to the Parley Baer family.

Incorrigible Lou had the distressing habit of disrupting filming by throwing pies in the faces of all cast and crew, except Clyde Beatty, who wrote, "The little bum didn't dare."
