This is completely off the subject, but I really admire John Ringling’s hat and attire. I thought I’d inherit my father’s three formal Stetsons, but it seems they were among the first things to be pilfered from what is left from his estate. I admire the era when dress was important, and even bums wore a proper hat, jacket and tie. Sadly, like elementary grammar, showing respect by appearance has faded away. Looking back at my 55 years what I just wrote is extremely hypocritical. Like almost everyone else I wear a baseball hat every day, however on my billboard brim I will not wear something that I wouldn’t indorse.
Two comments. First, that isn't John Ringling's signature on the photo. Someone wrote in his name. Second, this photo was taken by the great Edward J. Kelty who was much better known for taking the wonderful panoramic images of circus, carnival and Coney Island personnel. In fact, I didn't know Kelty did portrait photography until I saw this picture.
Little John,
Remember when our fathers used to tell us "it isn't as good as it used to be" and we thought they were nut's, because the 70's seemed pretty grand compared to the 30's?" Well now we are the ones who are nut's when we say "it isn't as good as it used to be." LOL

I think this portrait of Mr.John is the center photo of the 1929 Ringling "Kelty" photo taken during their stand in the Garden. He is surrounded by about 300 other photos of performers in this photo. I am sorry I don't have my notes with me as to the exact number of personal in the photo, but pretty sure of the year.
p.j.
I have a photo of John Ringling that must have been taken at the same sitting.
The pose is different but it is an original Kelty; I will scan it and email it over the weekend.
