Victorian cemetery grave markers were often symbolic. The broken pole signified an unfulfilled life, "cut down" before reaching fruition. You'll find a similar broken symbol on J. Augustus Jones grave; he died prematurely after being kicked by a horse.

Buckles,
Coming from North Dakota, not to be mistaken for the counterfeit Dakota down south, or the frozen wasteland to the east, known as Minnesota or Herriott Land, the story I always heard was the funds were raised by the good citizens of Wahpeton, in Richland County, home of the North Dakota State College of Science, and the Wahpeton Huskies.

Looks like somebody went south with the scratch!

Buckles,
Down south is the only place the hooligans would find sanctuary. To add authenticity to the "tale", can you imagine a show sticking around very long after something like this happening?
