CLOWNS, ELEPHANTS, CARVED WAGONS- THE CIRCUS HAS COME TO TOWN

"The congestion of automobiles in large cities is rapidly driving these brilliant pageants from the streets, depriving the big top of it's showy advertisement and children of their thrill. Recently however, circus "Jumbos" shuffled through some of the residential streets of the National Capital and youngsters were heard again to exclaim: "Mamma, there go the elephants! I know, 'cause they have a tail at each end!"

This is the neatest tail gate contraption I ever saw, painted in Tech's colors - -white and gold. It was on the Tech campus for the Duke contest on the 20th. Tim took the picture after the game. I'll swear, if we are not careful, these cell phone digital cameras will make the KODAK Brownie extinct.

Note the girl getting a cold draft out of the spigot in the left side. On the right the owner has a huge flat screen TV attached to the side of the truck with an awing extending out so that sun light does not interfere with the image (the late afternoon Ohio State - Iowa game was on the tube). The folks up top are enjoying "refreshments." The guy who owned the engine told Tim that he bought it up north a couple of years ago - -Indiana I think.

The "Dodd" slogan on the engine reminds me of a newspaper headline "IN DODD WE TRUST," when Bobby Dodd's Jackets pulled off a colossal upset (7 - 0) over Georgia in Athens in 1950 - -first time a Dodd team ever won from Wally Butt's Dogs over there. It was the 2nd of Dodd's 8 straight over the Dogs. What a far cry from now.

In addition to Georgia, that 1950 Tech team beat Florida, Auburn, and LSU, but had a losing season They were crushed by Bama 54 - 19 and SMU 33 - 13 (with its great Kyle Rote - later NY Giants). Also Tech lost to VMI (good grief), Duke, South Carolina and KY. The KY loss (28 - 14) was expected as they, coached by Bear Bryant and led by QB Babe Parilli, were SEC champs and beat Bud Wilkinson's national champ OK in the Sugar Bowl.

On the right of the photo is our grandson Richard 5th (age 8). He is holding a miniature football (in Tech colors) and is playing catch with his sisters (Ansley and Mary) and his 1st cousin Ashlyn (Tim's daughter) - -all of them 8 and 10 years old.

We could enjoy such after the game because Tech won.

Now another season winds to an end. This marked the 69th year since I first saw a Tech football game in person, that in 1942.

Mickey Mouse Circus #1 (From Eric Beheim)

The Mickey Mouse Club Circus at Disneyland was the subject of a View-Master 3-reel packet. Buckles posted some of these photos a few years ago. Here are all 21 of the images from that set, along with their original VM captions:

Buckles,
Perhaps I am just ignorant but what is a martingale and what is it used for?
Thanks Jeff

"A martingale is more commonly associated with horses.
As you can see in the picture above, chains are run from the bands half way up his tusks to the girt strap encircling his chest just behind his forelegs, to prevent him from lashing out.
My father mentioned that this was the only elephant he ever saw with flat knobs on his tusks, like a door knob."

At the extreme right one of the elephants is wearing a martingale.
This would be "Mighty" from the B&B herd.
My dad told me that at this point the show carried five males
"John", "Sammy" and "Rio" from Ringling and "Albert" and "Mighty"
from Barnum & Bailey, the latter was the only one with ivory.

I once asked Hugo Schmitt what the chances were of having a herd
with five males and only one with tusks and he said, "I don't think so!"

I read that tuskless males in jungle are especially aggressive since
they are at a handicap competing for females.

Sells & Gray TIGER (1963) One-Sheet Flat

From Chris Berry

Tigers and circus posters have gone hand-in-hand since the late 19th Century, and considering some of the other posters that were used in the early 1960s this particular one-sheet is a gem. This stock image is quite striking and very nicely integrates the Sells & Gray title into the composition.
