Barnum Show #7

You will notice that clowns were included in this "generally useful"
number. My dad said that as a child he saw one that included an
Uncle Sam as well as a Hattie McDaniel type "Mammy" running down the ramp.

That is more the version I've seen most of - posters, postcards, etc.

I presume the "clown" types were useful both because they were usually acrobats anyway but mainly if there was an accident where someone got hurt doing it (& many did) they could cover the recovery operation without the audience getting too alarmed (& perhaps even laughing).

Actually Frederick, the term 'generally useful', or 'as useful' was in their contracts as additional duties to be performed 'as generally useful'. ~frank
