A frightful thought just occurred to me.
If the coils were suddenly removed her head would collapse and have to be supported manually, giving the lady a serpentine effect.
What an attraction that would have been!
That did happen. As punishment for various infractions within the tribe, a woman could lose her neck rings. Since the neck muscles had atrophied, she could no longer hold up her head and usually died from asphixiation.
