I have always thought that tramp clowns came into prominence with the Great Depression. Everyone could relate to the consequence hard times.
In more recent years they have been replaced with hippies, the
homeless and addicts, nothing amusing here.

Skelton & Jackie Gleason had some

excellent hobo characters among

their repetoire and obviously

"The Little Tramp" of Chaplin

was possibly his most enduring

but not really hobo like
