According to Joe Bradbury, the 1948 big top had four center poles and was a 210-foot round (some sources say 220) with four 60 foot middle pieces. It was similar to the one used in 1942. |

Buckles -
Am I looking at this wrong - it looks like only three middles???
~frank
The other middles were spares
I once asked George Werner how big the 1951 big top was and he said 208' across with four 58' middles.
Actually its 6 as each middle
has 2 sides (so there are 10
big bags for a 4 pole top plus
the sidewall bags)
Can anyone tell me if they had
spool trucks in those days of
canvas on Ringling or did they
come later on (and by whom)
I recall seeing early photos
of the bagged sections being
loaded separately
Chic, Ringling never spooled any canvas that I am Aware of. Johnny
Thanks John
Spool wagons seem to be the kind
of thing that Art Concello might
have come up with
Can anyone tell us the history
of these incredible devices that
saved much time although they
did punish the canvas
Lief once told me that they were
the worst thing for his tops
I first saw 1 on the Beatty show
in 61 but they probably predated
