I have told the story several times about the day D.R. and my dad went from the Kelly-Miller lot to see Campa Bros. Circus that was showing nearby. Later in the afternoon I was shocked to see them returning down the midway with D.R. supporting the Col. who was incapacitated. The only time I ever saw him drunk. As they passed by Donnie MacIntosh yelled out from the concession truck, "The Lone Ranger Rides Again!"
Some years later, Barbara gave me the other side of the story since she and Rex were on the Campa Show that year. She said Rex came up rather excited saying that Bill Woodcock was on the lot and he wanted to show him the elephants. She went along out of curiosity and was surprised at how quiet and composed my dad was. Rex said, "I'd like for you to look at this elephant's foot and let me know what you think is wrong with it. Where upon the Colonel leaned forward and kept right on going. Everybody picked him up and carried him back to D.R.'s car. |

Buckles, it`s interesting that you posted this today about Lee Powell. Bob Cline,Harold McFeely,& myself spent the day in York SC. They had their first "Under The Big Top Festival" there today comemorating the days of the old Barnett Bros and Wallace Bros Circuses that wintered their. We also learned that another small circus Bennett Bros was started there by 5 brothers that live in York, Two of the Bennett Bros are still living Bill & Charles and were there today. We displayed tables of circus memorabelia and models and had a great turnout and good time. The McCelvey Center which is the York history center also had lots of displays of the three shows. The old winterquarter buildings are still there although they have been somewhat upgraded. Bob & myself will send you some photos. We also visted Rosemont Cemetery where Ray Rogers, his wife, Baron Novak and many others connected with the shows are buried. We will be sending you more information soon.
Mr Rogers married the Baron's mother in about 1940 and I imagine it's this wife who is buried with him rather than the girls' mother.
You are correct Dave.
There was one picture on display of Buckles father working the elephants with Helene Rogers. There was also one with a well tusked male elephant which must have been "Danny."
Bob
Buckles: I've never been quite sure if this story means your dad and Lee Powell had apparently been drinking buddies. Was that what you gathered from Donnie's remark?
Either that or they rode menage horses in the show!
Hmmm..
drink alcohol or ride menage...
Hmmm...
Decisions, decisions...
