During World War II, Lee Powell served in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of sergeant. On July 24, 1944, he was part of the invasion force that landed on the island of Tinian in the Mariana Islands. Although small in size, Tinian had tremendous strategic value since it was within flying distance of the Philippine Islands and Japan. (The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would later be launched from Tinian.) |
