Continuing with TRU-VUE’s coverage of the 1941 Ringling-Barnum Circus, filmstrip No. 3 was mostly comprised of action shots taken during a performance.
Photo #1 shows what was most likely a matinee crowd, waiting for the front door to open. (Looking at this photo today, one must keep in mind that it was taken back when most men wore a coat, tie and hat while out in public, even when going to the circus.) Seen in the background is the Norman Bel Geddes-designed sideshow front. Its 16 panels were supported by six steel pylons, each weighing 1,000 pounds apiece. (Most of Bel Geddes’ “innovations” had been discarded by the start of the 1942 season.) |
