The image is from the "studio" of Dr. B. J. Palmer, otherwise known for his rescue and preservation of the 1903 B&B Two Hemispheres Bandwagon. His Palmer School of Chiropractic still carries on in Davenport, Iowa, turning out dozens and dozens of bone manipulators. He's the fellow that published the booklet about the Two Hemispheres, the one rife with errors, like it rolled through Europe.
The odd position of the swallower's ears, due to the head being tilted back, suggests that this may be an actual X-ray type view, and not ont that's gaffed. A faker might not have known the requisite head position. Perhaps a bonafide sword swallower can verify this is indeed an actual view?
Chic, I don't remember any flourescent tubes back in the mid 40's. Also, they were colored and I don't think they had pliable colored plastic wrap back then. Of course, I might be wrong as I'm getting forgetful after so many years. Bob Kitto

Kind of remnds me of the neon tubes that they used to swallow.
That left no questions in the audiences mind that it was a fake.

Those were fluorescent tubes Bob
which could be lit from one end
with an RF signal
Chic,

Fluorescent tubes did go back
that far but if the ones you
mention were of colored glass
then they could well have been
neon tubing but could not have
been lit from one end nor with
an RF signal
It appears the neon tubes were actually a single tube which was bent into narrow "u" shape. At least this is what I can recall having seen a few.
