This looks west. The photo was taken from AMTRAK's Peachtree (Brookwood) station. Norfolk Southern's main line from Atlanta to Washington is at the right with a container train moving through. At the left is I-85 . It merges with I-75 just around the curve to the left. I-75 goes under the railroad tracks. All I-85 commuters got an eye-full of Cavalia as they headed into town. Traffic is light because it is Sunday morning. In the background is the 2005 Atlantic Station development and the Cavalia lot. Atlantic Station is almost a city in itself - - office and condo towers, town houses, restaurants, scads of retailers (including a monster IKEA), and movie theaters. . Atlantic Station sits on what was formerly the site of the Atlantic Steel Company's large steel mill. The railroad track that looks like it is heading into Cavalia's back yard was the lead spur for railroad service to the mill. It is now used for AMTRAK car storage and the occasional Crescent passenger train when it gets too far behind schedule to continue westward and has to lay over here with the westbound passengers being bused to Birmingham, Meridian, New Orleans et al. That main line once took circus trains to the Highland Ave showgrounds. About mile behind me is Armour junction at which a belt line headed south for the old lot. This main line has also seen a lot of trips by the Blue and Red Unit trains entering and exiting the city. |
