The only photo coverage I have of Pablo Noel’s lion act is some 16mm movie footage I shot in 1972 when the Blue Unit was in San Diego. Usually the Circus played San Diego in early July, but that year, it came in much later. (I seem to recall that the San Diego Sports Arena was angling to host the Republican National Convention in 1972 and must have put that date on hold far in advance. As it turned out, the convention was held elsewhere.) This first frame enlargement was taken in the backyard as Pablo’s lions were being transported to the Arena’s back door. |

I auditioned for Clown College that summer at the Forum in Inglewood. I believe Ron Severini was married the same night during the show. I was less than impressed with the clowns I met at that audition. Then I discovered years later that they had a bachelor party the night before... if it was anything like Jimmy Briscoe's bachelor party on the Red Show they were probably still loaded!
Pablo's act was great. Tommy Baker once told me that they would take Pablo's old shell casings and put them in Charlie Bauman's boots ...
