Mel Koontz is doubling again, a great specialty of his with highly trained, and sought-after movie cats.
Benny Bennett loved to tell of the filming of these scenes, when a tiger took a leap and landed with all four paws on Mel's helmet, cramming it down below his ears. Mel struggled violently to remove the helmet and both ears were bleeding. Benny said if ever he saw a tiger laughing, this one was.
But Mel's pay wasn't funny. On DeMille pictures, Mel demanded and got $1,500 a day--in the late 40s and early 1950s!
