Fred Bradna was loathe to be called a "Ringmaster". He took great pains to explain in his book, THE BIG TOP, co-authored with the elegant word stylings of Hartzell Spence, that the ringmaster is the one who monitors the horses' gaits for the bareback riding act. Bradna's formal title was Equestrian Director, he who directs the show and blows the whistle, as he so aptly descibes in Chapter 8, "The Man With the Whistle", beginning on page 101, which see.
