BEATTY - COLE 3 SOME (From John Whitfield)

BEATTY - COLE 3 SOME, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Buckles,
Cleaning out more today and found more pictures. Found an envelope I did not know
I had sent from Alfred to Willie before Alfred died. And I have more. This 1966 picture of Frank, Willie and Art was not part of the set.

That was an exciting year on the

Beatty Show when Art became a

partner by buying Bonnie Kernan's

share and spending much of his

time on the show

He brought quite a few acts to

spruce things up including the

Bale Family and Manfred Fritsch

I believe Jack Joyce and Ethel

Jennier also came that year

And new seat wagons for the show as well. But what an irony to have this picture posted the same day as Johnny Pugh's as it was quite an adventure for these several folks pictured today as to who would be running the show! For all his tough old ways, Concello did not last.

I think Art had several motives

for "buying in" and he never

intended to stay with it

For one he helped Bonnie get

more than she was previously

offered and he seemed to enjoy

poking Frank by shaming him to

reinvest in the show

Some said that he was getting

even for some past issues

Another story is that Concello wanted to put up 6 poles. The others did not, and this led to conflicts.

Chic Silber said...

I don't believe that was any

part of the conflict at that

time Roger but perhaps that

story was from another event

The tops for many years had

4 centers 20 outside quarters

and 30 inside quarters from

Leif Osmundsen originally and

then from Butch Troyer at A1

I believe it had been a 160 at

one time but became a 150 with

the same 50 foot middles

I believe the Beatty show went from Leif to Anchor. If memory serves me, when Butch had A1, they never built a Beatty big top. I worked for Butch during several off times, in fact he built my first big top.

You may be correct about the

timing of switching to Anchor

I know that Butch built at least

a few of the Beatty tops but

that may have been at the old

shop (not the original) after

that Jabroni bought it from Leif

What was that yahoos name Eric

and does 128 sound about right

for the number of sidewall poles

By the way Butch's brother Vern

still gives me a hand now & then

Sorry Erik about the misspelling

The story on the lot in '64 was that Concello wanted 6 poles to bring the Beatty show to the size of RBBB's glory days to show he could do it. McClosky and company preferred the more manageable 4 poles, which they of course retained, not wanting to get so big they stood to lose the thing. Art opted out when voted down. This was only a story, but valid or no, it was a colorful version of Art's departure. The story was solemnly published by Eddie Dullum, so one may draw one's own conclusions.

Art only bought in at the end

of 65 and although I loved

"Mother" I certainly wouldn't

count on her credibility with

a story like that Roger

Chic,
With a Leif 150' round with three 50's there were around 78 side poles, the distance between side poles being 9' and change. A European top would have approximately twice that number.

Thanks Erik

Can anyone remember the guy that

bought Leaf Tent & Sail from Leif

Nice fellow without a clue
