The Stephenson's were GREAT people with two wonderful acts between the dogs and the bareback riding. Alzana on the highwire - you don't get much better than that! I agree, for a 'down' show, this one was packed with the best of the best! ~frank
I remember attending the 1961 show in Winston-Salem with my mom. I was only 11-years old but the act that I remember the most was Harold Alzana ascending the forty-five degree wire. Then of course his jump rope routine and doubling the rope and of course almost “falling”. In my humble opinion, he is one of the greatest performers of all time. One can still view this act today in the 1952 movie.
I visited the show that year, and under North control and management by Concello and his staff, along with the acts named here, it was still The Greatest Show On Earth.
the story about the ringling performance quality slipping before the felds bought the show is just another attempt at rewriting hstory. john ringling north always gave patrons the greatest show on earth. with north, the end ring acts were center ring caliber. there was never any filler
