THE CONEY ISLAND BOOM A RING TENT RISES ON JUNE 5

The New Summertime Home of The Greatest Show On Earth® in New York.
Brooklyn, NY — Feld Entertainment, parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, announced today that the landmark tent raising for The Coney Island BOOM A RING will take place (weather allowing) on Friday, June 5, at 10 a.m. at the corner of 21st Street and Surf Avenue.
“This is a huge day in the history of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey,” said Stephen C. Yaros, Feld Entertainment’s VP of Event Marketing and Sales, Northeast Region. “The arrival of The Coney Island BOOM A RING marks the first time ever that The Greatest Show On Earth® will be performing in Brooklyn — the first time this show will be in New York City — and the first time it will be performing under the big top. This is definitely an historic occasion!”
Traveling nearly 3,500 miles from Mobile Stadiums, Ltd. in Sheffield, England, to Coney Island, the state-of-the-art air-conditioned main tent is approximately 28,842 sq. ft. and will seat 2,400 patrons for each performance. The foyer tent, which will house the food court, is approximately 8,625 sq. ft. Both will be the most visible cornerstones of Feld Entertainment’s major site renovation. Throughout the process, Feld has worked closely with lot owner Taconic Investment Partners, whose cooperation has been instrumental in bringing The Greatest Show On Earth to Coney Island.
Performances inside the big top will begin June 17 with a private preview show: Feld Entertainment is working with the Coney Island Development Corporation to get free tickets to children and families in Coney Island who have so graciously welcomed us to their neighborhood.
All these efforts will culminate in the historic opening night performance that will take place June 18 and include a special Salute To Coney Island.

Anyone else notice the ongoing trend of Feld Entertainment to avoid the word CIRCUS in their press releases? Anyone else notice that not once in this publicity release did they mention that this was a CIRCUS? They called it a 'The Greatest Show On Earth', 'the Coney Island Boom-a-Ring', it was called a 'show', an 'it', and twice as just 'a ferformance' - but never a CIRCUS. I wonder if this is a conscious move on 'their' part??? ~frank

"Weather Allowing?" what a candy-ass operation that must be.
I think 24,000 was about the seating with Big Apple when we were there.

The full title of the show

historically was "Ringling

Bros. and Barnum & Bailey

Combined Shows Inc." and for

some reason much paper just

had "TGSOE" along with that

Soon after the Felds took

over the second time they

changed the corporate title

to "I & K Productions Inc."

but that didn't last very long

With the loss of the Italian dates, would this now become an open ended engagement if anyone shows up.

the comment that the GSOE has never played Brooklyn is false--as i recall, the tent show always played Brooklyn, perhaps after Boston Garden.

Historians?

Good morning Buckles,
I see that we have more Feld revisionist history going on here.
According to Mr. Yaros, this is the first time in the history of "The Greatest Show On Earth" that they have played Brooklyn, the first time that this unit is in New York City and the first time this unit is under a Big Top. Well I guess two out of three isn't bad.
Mr. Yaros needs to check history before the Felds took over. Between 1919 and 1938 "The Greatest Show On Earth" played Brooklyn a total of 16 times. The usual lot was at Flatbush & Nostrand Aves. I'm sure that there are some "old timers" out there that might remember this.

Dom Yodice

Jerry is right. The Big Show under canvas often played Brooklyn following the Boston Garden date.

The lot was at Flatbush and Nostrand Avenues.

Buckles - WOW, Big Apple sat 24,000! Now in what future year will this statement be repeated as gospel truth?

Take care tomorrow. Yes, a good book is adviseable!

IT'S GONNA TAKE 12 DAYS TO SET UP???

Maybe they need some REAL show folks to handle logistics!

Where is D R Miller when they need him.

Geary Byrd sets up almost every day in a tent that holds about the same number of people, maybe he should loan them Jaime Garcia to show them how a real "CIRCUS" sets up!!!!
On the other hand, Jaime is probably the best there is and he would probably not stoop so far as to help this broadway production.

The Coney Island tent for Ringling came from the concern above. You will see the Holiday on Ice production used a four pole tent, 66m x 66m, which translates to roughly 216' x 216'.

The artist rendition shows a six pole tent which would put Coney Island at 216' x 432'.

I don't think there is any big top legend, living or dead, that could erect this structure with proper seating, theatrical lighting, et cetera in 24 hours.

I am certain the professionals from England know exactly what they are doing. Keep in mind the picky New York City and New York State inspectors: building, fire, health, etc. The inspectors could tie this up for days!

Let's wait and see, shall we?

The Brooklyn under-canvas date was often near the "First of May," when huge numbers of additional personnel arrived to handle the canvas and other touring chores.

"First of May" has evolved into meaning a first season performer. But, back then, it meant an employee who began working when the show moved from indoors -- Madison Square and Boston Garden -- to canvas.

Yes Mike

The "City" (of which Brooklyn

is still a borough) codes and

inspections of all temporary

structures have become much

more stringent since there

have been several serious

crane accidents some of which

have taken lives

BUT who knows they may just

have an old fashioned "Patch"

Yeah very likely

They have not used the word circus in a few years. Buckles, on the lines of what you stated, every show intro begins "Kenneth Feld and Nicole Feld are proud to present.. Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey...Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth." No "circus" mentioned.

NO ARGUMENT FRANK

Hal was the VERY BEST and was

there before the changeover

Many opening numbers would

start with his singing "Come

To The Circus The Greatest

Show On Earth"
