I'm sure the eyes were covered to prevent the possibility of damage from the sun while he is unconscious.
I am sure that the elephants in Tenn. have their pads and nails tended to on scheduled time frame. In my times I have never been around any elephants that had to be rompuned or sedated in order to being attended to. I know of a couple herds that would be difficult. Using a draw knife to trim the pads. Coloring can go from white to light pink to pretty red. Jimmy Reynolds referred it to a "slow walk, step lively and go on."
