Doesn't really fit here but I thought it might still be interesting.
A German magazine "Der Spiegel" has pictures and the history of elephants in Berlin on its website. Though the content is in German, the pictures are worth seeing. http://einestages.spiegel.de/external/ShowAuthorAlbumBackground/a898/l0/l0/F.html#featuredEntry

The article appeared in conjunction with the publication of a book on the history of elephants in Berlin since it was 150 years ago that the first zoo elephant arrived in Berlin. The Berlin Zoo opened in August 1844 and it was not too long before their first elephant (a nine year old Indian named Boy) was acquired in late 1857 from the Liphard Menagerie. Boy grew to be 3.30 meters tall and was a difficult animal, killing one of his keepers in Feb 1867. He finally died at age 22 on July 18, 1879.

The first known elephant in the German speaking region came in 802 as a gift from the Caliph of Baghdad to Charles the Great. The first believed to enter Berlin, however, was in December 1689 and the locals could view the beast for a few pennies. The Berlin Zoo was the site of an elephant birth on Dec 18, 1906, but “Editha” died 24 days later.

More recently, the Berlin Zoo has had a number of births and Berlin, in its two zoos, is now home to 30 elephants. All this and more can be read in Bernhard Blaszkiewitz’s book “Elefanten in Berlin” published just one year ago.
