Al G. Barnes Tuskers #10

Scan11034, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

I got to know Slim Lewis pretty well from my Polack Show days when we would play Seattle.
During our first meeting he spent a lot of time talking about "Tusko" and when he arrived at the moment of his unexpected death, he broke down in tears.
At the time I thought it odd that he would be so deeply affected thirty years after the fact but as time passes by and thinking of all the great elephants I have known, I understand him a lot better.

Bud,
Normally if a stallion is "crying" it is because something like hay chaffe is in it's eye, or he has been hit in the eye. Better get it looked at and get some creme on it. It may cloud over, but don't let that alarm you.

Buckles,
That is a fact. If tears don't well up in your eyes, thinking about some of the good ones, your stone cold. You don't begin to appreciate an elephant from a distance. You need to live and breathe them.

Buckles,
An earlier picture of Tusko with all the iron is dated 1931. In this photo his tusks look to have grown 4 or 5 inches, and he is no longer chainmailled up heavier then Sir Lancelot. Do you know what year this photo was taken? Thanks for the pictures, I could look at these boy's all day. That Diamond was sure a handsome guy.

Buckles...Slim Lewis went on to write a great book.."Elephant Tramp" which in a second edition was largely pics of elephants he and others had worked with. Slim introduced you to me when you were on Polack after taking over from Mac and Peggy. Paul Pugh
